Austin-based
avant-garde film artist Aaron Valdez will hold a retrospective screening of his
innovative short films and premiere his newest film, Throwing Stones at the Sun,
on Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at the Hideout Theater
at 617 Congress. The screening will begin at 8pm. General admission
is $6.00. $3.00 for Austin Film Society and
Cinemaker Co-op members. The filmmaker will be available for questions following
the screening.
Recently featured in the Austin Museum of Arts 22 to
Watch, Aaron Valdez is a rising voice in the American avant-garde film world.
The screening will include selections of his award-winning work in experimental
documentary, animation, found film collage, underwater filmmaking, multiple projector
performance, and hand-painted film. The night will conclude with the Austin premiere
of his latest work, Throwing Stones at the Sun, a series of documentary vignettes
that capture scenes and abstractions in everyday life to explore its beauty and
express an appreciation for the ordinary details of day-to-day existence.
Valdez
has won acclaim for his innovations with the short film format and as a projection
artist. Valdezs film and installation work has screened at SXSW, Cinematexas
International Short Film and Video Festival, Margo Sawyers ¼ Hora
Gallery in Elgin, Blue Star Art Space in San Antonio, Austin Museum of Art, Jones
Center for Contemporary Art, Aurora Picture Show, Basement Films, Splice This!,
and many other festivals and screening spaces across the U.S. Throwing Stones
at the Sun so far has been selected for screening at the Dahlonega International
Film Festival and won the Jurors Choice Award from Greta Snider at the Thaw
International Film Video and New Media Festival. It is currently touring festivals
internationally.
